Question of the Day: What button presses should Zerogame use to quit an emulator?

Hi everyone...

I've run into a little bit of an issue with Zerogame and I wanted to know what the community thinks would be best.

At the moment, we've been using the Playstation button as our universal "quit this now" button. However, there is a problem. There's no way I can send XMAME a fake keyboard command through Gizmod since it refuses to recognize multiple keyboards at a base level. That means that if we want to have a standardized quit function across all emulators, we're going to have to choose something else.

In the past, we've previously used the right analog stick press, which was fine, but I worried a bit that when playing games that use both analog sticks (SMASH TV for example), that players might press down on the stick and accidentally quit.

Anyone interested in voicing their opinions on the matter can do so with the poll I've created: http://thezerogameproject.com/poll/whats-best-choice-buttons-use-quittin...

it would be nice to use the PS button to exit, maybe you can find a way to hold the right analog button down for like 5-10 seconds to exit?

as you already know my six axxis doesnt work with XMAME, only the keyboard works, ive deleted the mame config and used the one you pointed out to me, but still its a no go.

the game works, and sound works, just the contollers doenst respond when i press anybutton, including ps button.

im hoping when .52 comes out, ill update and hope it works, if still no luck, ima re-install YDL 6.2 + ZGP

You haven't posted your default.cfg yet. XMAME and MAME aren't the same thing.

I would like to keep the PS button as "quit" for all the emulators. Since this is not possible on xmame, I would suggest using a button combo, such as both right and left sticks pressed together, to avoid accidents but only for xmame. L2 + R2 would also work, but some games may require this button combo.

I *really* dislike not having a function like that as standard across all emulators. But the real issue here is that if everything's going well, you aren't going to know if you're ever using MAME or XMAME, so keeping things consistent across all emulators is something that has to be done.

::Edit:::
Sorry Pyr0, I had started typing an hr ago but never hit submit, I think you and I are thinking around the same lines :)

please excuse my ignorance, totally out of my element right now...

Would it accept "trigger" of 2 button pushes at the same time?

So you could push "Select" and "Start" at the same time to send the "exit to menu" command?

I can't think of any games that require you to hit select and start at the same time, can anyone else? (if suggesting 2 buttons at the same time is not ludacris)

It's not a bad idea... we'll see what happens.

I would also recommend changing the "boot to GameOS" button in the Zerogame menu. It's way too easy to hit accidentally, and it basically means "back" or "up one level" from the emulator but not within the Zerogame menu. Could you hold it for a period of time? Or, at the least, can hitting it give you a choice to boot or not boot (aka an "Are you sure?" option)?

I know start-select is the way you exit boards in Super Mario World for snes.. not sure if it will work. Is there a way to bring up a promt asking you if you want to exit? that way you can still use the stick method without quiting games.
